In 1978, Carol Schultz served as program chair. She arranged for Peter Hanff to do a slide presentation on L. Frank Baum's remarkable output of over sixty books between 1897 and 1920. Hanff focused primarily on Baum's books that were not part of his fourteen-title Oz series, but those titles were certainly featured as well. A black and white copy of the 1933 animated cartoon, THE WIZARD OF OZ, was shown to the Winkies for the very first time. Dick Rutter, fairly new among the Winkies, won the costume contest in a magnificently wrought Tin Woodman costume. Claude Cain of San Francisco served as Winkie auctioneer (the Hollisters were traveling on sabbatical).
