John Ebinger, of Oakland, California, chaired the 1982 Winkie Convention. He arranged for a nearly complete display of the entire run of THE BAUM BUGLE. The display revealed how the magazine evolved from a simple mimeographed group of pages to a sophisticated journal with handsome and historically important full-color covers. An Oz Research Table to which authors contributed essays, stories, and art was featured as well. Once again Dick Rutter won the Winkie Costume Contest, this time as the Braided Man as depicted in DOROTHY AND THE WIZARD IN OZ (1908). For the first time a separate prize for a child's costume was awarded, to Zachary Martinez who was an impressive, growling Cowardly Lion at about two and a half feet tall! Peter Hanff presented a slide-illustrated history of the development of the Oz Club and the Winkie Convention.
